Part Nouveau and the Bleeding Cool Swipe File
Came across Part Nouveau via Hint, which aims to give credit where credit’s due. Lilah Ramzi, a graduate student of fashion history, created the site in an effort to identify, “…anything within the creative field that borrows, reappropriates or is directly inspired by a work which preceded it”.
From “Arsenic and Old Lace”, which compares Edward Steichen’s photo of Gloria Swanson and Paolo Roversi’s photo of Tilda Swinton for Acne Paper magazine.
On the comics end of my awareness spectrum this translates to the Bleeding Cool Swipe File, which covers repurposing, “[s]wipes, homages, coincidental similarities, joking juxtapositions, the lot”. Below is an art comparison (ripoff? That’s for you to decide.) between Budd Lewis, Gonzalo Mayo and Bernie Wrightson’s El Cid and Philippe Druillet’s Lone Sloane from “El Cid, Forty Years On” (because I’m always on the prowl for Druillet in used or comic book stores. I have Chaos from the series, but have almost given up hope of finding any of the other books in English.):
The Swipe File’s comparison of art from Lone Sloane vs. El Cid.
