These show a tremendous amount of work and planning, but I am sorry, they are the least inspiring articles of knitted clothing I could imagine. I apologize if this angers you, but they have nothing but “glitz”. Why do no designers actually seem to design clothing that is flattering, functional, the least bit tasteful or of any use to a normal, average and size 4 and above person any more? These do not combine any thing but yarn. They are not traditional, they are useful for a runway show only or display models.
When I was in art school(not that long ago) instructors rapped our heads for trying to submit these types of designs because they were showy and took much time but accomplished nothing useful.

Brilliant??? All I can say is……..WHAT???!!! Sorry…we would wear those where???? All they make me want to do is find out where the heck the seams are so I can unravel it to use the wool for something more useful.

Yeah…what a waste of time and energy. And no…I won’t appologise for my “rudeness”. It’s time that designers stop wasting their time, and more importantly OURS, with so much fluff and start designing things that are actually wearable to more than a tacky costume party.

BRILLIANT. I can’t agree less with Sandi and Louise. I respect their ideas but these pieces are just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

WOW! Incredible collection from Sandra Backlund. Reminds me of RISD professor and knitwear designer, Liz Collins, although Sandra’s stuff is more about volume and more architectural looking, but Liz does some similar experimental work with knits.

Bravo to a designer that leaves the ordinary to those who can only construct on a repetative basis these desgns move forward and open new possibilities and dimensions. Love them Dianne

While I appreciate the design & work that went into the structure of these creations, I’d rather see something that flatters the human form than flattering itself in an almost onanastic way…

The headress is beautiful in a fully non-functional manner, while the dresses negate the female form that displays them. Sorry, but there’s a difference between having no tits & hiding them.

Bravo on the effort, abstract style, & photography, but please don’t expect me (or anyone else for that matter) to be begging for the patterns.

I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT. I LLOOVVVEE IITTT!!!!

Fashion can be about so much more than what you can wear down to the shops and these garments are a clear example of just that. Challenging design broadens our view of the world and enriches life, why restrict yourself to what feels comfortable because it has been done countless times before? Garments don’t have to be completely functional or even aesthetically pleasing for that matter, to be sucessful.

I would happily wear any of these pieces anywhere!!

It’s curious that this collection, which I find the most wearable of the collections Sandra has created so far has people reacting negative to it. I find it hard to understand someone who is not impressed by her work. I understand all the talk about creating pieces that are flattering, etc, but thankfully in fashion and arts there is room for everything… Wearable, not wearable, flattering, not flattering… to me the import thing is to experiment, try to go further, break limits, discover knew things and this Sandra has been doing brilliantly, there is no doubt. Particularly about this collection, I love she used red, and love and would DEFINITELY wear the pieces in photos 2, 3, and 4. I would make me so happy…

    Go Sandra! Bye bye.

These pieces aren’t for the average person walking down the street to pick up some milk at the 7-Eleven. Sandra’s pieces are artwork. She manipulates the yarn to make it into wearable art. Not all yarn is meant to be a baby blanket or a little cardi. Gone are the days where knitting is inside the box.

I am excited to see what she can come up with and to continue inspiring knitwear designers to bringing new and unusual designs for us to see.

    You go Sandra!
