Favorites from Milan Fashion Week
Reviewing the s/s 2007 shows from Milan was an educational exercise, pushing past the standard reports on Versace, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Fendi, Ferragamo, etc. Despite being severely limited by knowing only one language, I made an effort to find more complete coverage. Favorites include well-known labels like Missoni and Bottega Veneta as well as some precious gems like Amuleti J obtained through a little mining.

The futuristic woman-as-swan collection from Amuleti J should secure designer Gabriele Colangelo a place on the list of gifted young designers with a thoroughly modern vision. The shell accessories are equal parts Princess Leia bun and seashell radio from Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, broadcasting white-noise music and chatter that render a person out of touch with reality (like the iPod clones whose numbers grow exponentially as I write this). It is interesting to note that Colangelo was formerly in the employ of Roberto Cavalli.

Antonio Marras’ s/s 2007 garden motifs are an appropriate choice ten years on from his debut. His signature timeless youth style, whether applied to his label or to Kenzo, is a perennial favorite of mine.

The Missoni girls aren’t only going on vacation next summer, these looks suggest they may even participate in a Hercule Poirot adventure - perhaps adrift on the Nile or on an archaeological excavation…

Laura Biagiotti and Bottega Veneta’s s/s 2007 collections are also perfectly suited for women that want a vacation wardrobe that is sophisticated yet practical for warmer weather. Bottega Veneta’s Tomas Maier thoughtfully included evening gowns that suggest as much ease and comfort as the day-to-night sandals that go with them.

Francesco Scognamiglio’s treatment of the cross motif is another cultural lesson for me in how sacred religious symbols affect a person’s creative output (I am referring to lessons from Fellini that teach me what a persistent force his faith is in all aspects of thought and behavior). Like Colangelo, Scognamiglio applies an ancient motif to beautifully modern looks.

As Paris seems to have the final word on all things fashionable, it will be interesting to see the climax of the s/s 2007 shows presented there.
