Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts: Final Year Collections - Mikio Sakabe
The Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts fashion show turned out brilliant collections this last June 15 – 17. It is near impossible to select favored collections over others - outside of technical considerations - because in the end it is a matter of taste. The following selections from the final year collections are favorites of mine. The first is Mikio Sakabe.

For his final year collection, Sakabe exercised a demonstration of opposites within a framework of men’s basics. His starting point was MANGA. “Two-dimensional drawing fits on fabric prints…MANGA drawings are flat…so I try to combine three-dimensional buildings or layers on clothes, making my city drawings deeper. That is a really good contrast. Three-dimensional buildings are cold, dark and strong. My prints are two-dimensional, warm and soft…every silhouette outside is cold but inside is warmed by my prints, expressing people’s emotion.â€
The following looks are from Sakabe’s “20XX A/W COLLECTION (@-@)â€:

Though nothing is quite definite yet, Sakabe has set his sights on Paris and is working toward starting his own label there next March.
